Nigeria’s junior swimming team has arrived in Egypt ahead of the Africa Junior Swimming Championship, scheduled to take place from 29 April to 3 May 2025.
The 14-member team comprises eight boys and six girls and is led by the President of the Aquatic Federation of Nigeria, Chinonye Daphey Aliyu, alongside the Federation’s Secretary-General, Taiwo Oriss. Also accompanying the team are the swimmers’ parents, Head Coach Yellow Yeiyah, and Assistant Coach Labake Oriretan.
The team has been in training camp for over two weeks and is fully prepared to compete for top honours. Among the standout athletes is Abduljabal, who will lead the boys’ team in the 50-metre and 100-metre freestyle events. Kashope and Aidan are tipped as Nigeria’s key contenders in the 50-metre and 100-metre backstroke events.
Other team members, including Ayobami, Angelo, and Stanley Ossai from Delta State, are in high spirits and determined to make a strong impression. Long-distance specialist Oluwatimilehin is also reported to be in excellent form ahead of the competition.
The girls’ team is equally prepared for the challenge, with Demilade Akanbi, Omolola, Atinuke, Boluwatife, Eva Omodara, and Tofunmi Ibidapo all aiming to secure podium finishes for Nigeria.
With what is the largest Nigerian contingent ever to attend an African swimming championship, the Aquatic Federation of Nigeria expressed confidence in the team’s ability to surpass previous records and make a significant impact on the continental stage.
