The National Economic Council (NEC) has approved the Revised National Social Protection Policy (NSPP) 2026–2030, aimed at strengthening social protection programmes and improving coordination across Nigeria.
Minister of Budget and Economic Planning Atiku Bagudu disclosed this while briefing State House correspondents after the August meeting of the Council, chaired by Vice President Kashim Shettima.
Bagudu said the Council had directed the 36 states to align their social protection policies, legislation, budgets and implementation plans with the revised national framework.
He said the policy also provides for the establishment of a National Social Protection Council to oversee the coordination and implementation of social protection initiatives across the country.

The proposed council will be chaired by the Vice President, with the Ministers of Budget and Economic Planning, Labour and Employment, and Humanitarian Affairs and Poverty Reduction serving as vice-chairs.
The Federal Ministry of Budget and Economic Planning will serve as the council’s secretariat, while six governors, representing the country’s six geopolitical zones, will sit as members.
The National Social Protection Policy 2026–2030 provides a framework for improving the coordination, financing, implementation, monitoring and accountability of social protection programmes across the federation.
