12-year-old Amazing-Grace Ahuoyiza Ebiebi Salami, the winner of the inaugural Spelling Bee in Nigeria (SpIN), has earned the honour of representing Nigeria at the 100th edition of the Scripps National Spelling Bee in Washington, D.C. Dr Abike Dabiri-Erewa, Chairman/CEO of the US Scripps Bee, praised her achievement and congratulated her for this remarkable milestone.
Dr. Dabiri-Erewa described the young champion’s accomplishment as a moment of immense national pride and a significant milestone for Nigeria, which is making its debut at the prestigious American competition. She noted that, with this feat, Nigeria joins Ghana as the only African countries to have ever participated in the nearly century-old event.
Speaking during a courtesy visit to NiDCOM’s headquarters in Abuja, the NiDCOM boss reaffirmed the commission’s commitment to supporting initiatives that empower young Nigerians and boost the country’s global presence through academic excellence and innovation.
Salami, who visited alongside her mother, Mrs. Kemi Salami, and the Country Director of the Young Educators Foundation, Mrs. Eugenia Tachie-Menson, expressed her excitement at the opportunity to compete internationally. She also pledged to represent Nigeria with distinction and thanked those who have supported her journey.
The Scripps National Spelling Bee, one of the oldest and most prestigious academic competitions in the United States, will celebrate its 100th edition this year. Salami’s participation marks a historic moment for Nigeria on the global educational stage.
