Nigeria’s Tobi Amusan has returned to the global podium for the first time since 2022, clinching the silver medal in the women’s 100m hurdles at the 2025 World Athletics Championships in Tokyo, Japan.
The world record holder ran 12.28 seconds to take second place behind Switzerland’s Ditaji Kambundji, who stormed to gold in a new national record of 12.24 seconds. Grace Stark of the United States claimed bronze in 12.34 seconds, while her compatriot Masai Russell finished fourth in 12.44 seconds.
The medal marks a significant comeback for the 27-year-old, who last tasted global success three years ago when she won gold at the 2022 World Championships in Oregon, setting a then world record of 12.12 seconds in the semi-finals.
Amusan’s journey back to the podium has not been without challenges, including injury setbacks and off-track controversies. Her Tokyo performance, however, has reaffirmed her place among the world’s elite hurdlers.
Athletics observers hailed her resilience and determination, noting that her return to medal-winning form is a major boost for Nigerian athletics and African representation in track and field.
With the Paris 2028 Olympics on the horizon, Amusan’s silver medal is expected to inspire a new generation of Nigerian athletes and reignite hopes of further global triumphs.
