The Nigerians in Diaspora Commission (NiDCOM) has congratulated Nigeria’s first indigenous female neurosurgeon, Dr Salamat Ahuoiza Aliu-Ibrahim, on her appointment as Medical Director of a children’s hospital in the United States.
In a statement issued in Abuja by the Director of the Media, Public Relations and Protocols Unit of NiDCOM, Abdur-Rahman Balogun, the Chairman/Chief Executive Officer of NiDCOM, Dr Abike Dabiri-Erewa, described the appointment as another remarkable milestone that “reinforces the fact that excellence knows no gender, race or religion”.
She added that Aliu-Ibrahim’s achievement would serve as “an inspiration to millions of young Nigerians, especially girls aspiring to pursue careers in medicine and other demanding professions”.
Dabiri-Erewa said the appointment also demonstrated that Muslim women could overcome stereotypes and prejudice while excelling in their chosen professions.
According to her, “Dr Salamat Aliu-Ibrahim’s appointment is yet another reminder that Muslim women cover their hair, not their brains.
“Her remarkable achievement demonstrates that faith and excellence are not mutually exclusive. She has become a beacon of hope and inspiration for countless young girls across Nigeria and beyond.”
The NiDCOM chairman urged Muslim women and other young Nigerians to remain committed to excellence, noting that competence, integrity and hard work were essential to achieving meaningful success.
While celebrating Aliu-Ibrahim’s accomplishment, Dabiri-Erewa expressed concern over the continued migration of highly skilled Nigerian healthcare professionals to other countries in search of better opportunities.

She acknowledged that Nigerian medical professionals in the diaspora continued to distinguish themselves globally and make significant contributions to humanity.
However, she said the Federal Government was taking steps to address challenges in the healthcare sector by improving the welfare, remuneration and working conditions of health workers.
Dabiri-Erewa stressed that creating a more conducive working environment for healthcare professionals would help reduce brain drain and strengthen Nigeria’s healthcare system for sustainable national development.
She commended Aliu-Ibrahim for projecting a positive image of Nigeria through her dedication, professionalism and excellence, and wished her continued success in her new role.
Dabiri-Erewa reaffirmed NiDCOM’s commitment to celebrating outstanding Nigerians in the diaspora whose achievements continue to enhance the country’s international reputation and inspire future generations.
