Nigerian global music sensation Tems was among the high-profile guests at the 2025 MET Gala, adding to the growing presence of African stars on the international stage.
While speaking on the red carpet, Tems used the moment to spotlight the diversity of African music. She noted that although Afrobeats has captivated international audiences, there is a wealth of other African genres that are equally worthy of global recognition.
“African music goes beyond Afrobeats,” she said. “Other genres from the continent have the potential to make a similar global impact.”
Tems attended the prestigious fashion event alongside fellow Nigerian music heavyweights Ayra Starr and Burna Boy, further cementing Nigeria’s influence in global entertainment.
Her appearance at the MET Gala underscored her rising status as one of the most sought-after international stars. The singer has found notable success in the United States, collaborating with global icons such as Beyoncé, Drake, and Future. On her debut album, Born In The Wild, she featured Grammy-winning American rapper J. Cole, with whom she also shared the stage earlier this year at the Dreamville Festival.

The year 2025 has already been a milestone for Tems. She secured her second Grammy Award at the 67th ceremony, winning Best African Song Performance. She also performed at London’s O2 Arena during the unveiling of Aston Martin’s new car for the 2025 Formula 1 season—another sign of her far-reaching appeal.
Her commercial success continues to grow, with four new RIAA certifications recently added to her name. She was also nominated for the American Music Awards and took home the Record of the Year honour at the 17th Headies Awards.
Tems’ steady ascent reflects not only her talent but also the expanding influence of African artists in global pop culture.
