The Anambra State AIDS Control Agency (ANSACA) has stepped up efforts to combat HIV and announced plans for activities to commemorate the 2026 World AIDS Week, with a focus on improving prevention, testing, public awareness and support services across the state.
The agency’s Public Relations Officer, Obianuju Isima, said the preparations were discussed during ANSACA’s monthly review meeting, where heads of various units evaluated their performance for August and mapped out priorities for September and subsequent months.
The meeting assessed programmes implemented during the month, reviewed achievements and challenges, and identified gaps requiring further attention. Officials also examined measures put in place to resolve outstanding issues and improve the effectiveness of ongoing interventions.
ANSACA commended Anambra State Governor, Prof. Chukwuma Charles Soludo, for his continued support for the state’s HIV programmes.
According to the agency, the administration’s backing has provided an enabling environment for expanding HIV prevention, testing, awareness campaigns and community-based interventions.
As part of preparations for World AIDS Day on December 1, ANSACA said it would organise a range of activities under the theme, “Rethink, Rebuild and Rise.”
The programme will include a press conference, HIV science symposium and research engagement, football tournament, advocacy walk, road shows and high-level advocacy visits to strategic stakeholders.
The agency has also constituted committees to oversee the different activities and ensure proper coordination, planning and implementation.
ANSACA said the review and planning session underscored its commitment to accountability, continuous improvement and stronger collaboration in tackling HIV and its broader public-health and social consequences.
It added that the World AIDS Week activities would provide an opportunity to renew public education on HIV prevention and testing, encourage greater access to support services and intensify efforts to tackle stigma associated with the virus.
The renewed drive by the state agency comes as Nigeria continues to strengthen its national HIV response, with sustained efforts in prevention, testing, treatment support and community engagement remaining essential to improving public-health outcomes.
