Nigerian artist Skales is currently enjoying a commercial resurgence, driven by the renewed popularity of his over-decade-old hit single Shake Body, which has recently gone viral on TikTok.
Seizing the momentum, Skales has announced the release date of his upcoming album titled Martina’s Son. The announcement was made via a post on his X (formerly Twitter) account, where he shared a video clip of himself in the studio with Nigerian gospel and Tungba music legend Yinka Ayefele. The duo is seen vibing to a track that samples one of Ayefele’s classic songs.

The album has already garnered significant attention ahead of its release, thanks in part to Skales’ recent rise in streaming numbers, fuelled by the resurgence of Shake Body.

The track recently caught the attention of Barcelona’s 16-year-old football sensation Lamine Yamal, whose dance videos to the song have gone viral on TikTok, where he commands a following of 26 million. In appreciation of Yamal’s role in reigniting interest in the track, Skales released a new single titled Dance Like Lamine Yamal.
Shake Body‘s renewed popularity also led Skales to surpass 1 million monthly listeners on Spotify for the first time in his career.
This resurgence adds to a growing trend of older Nigerian songs gaining traction on TikTok. In 2024.
Other Nigerian tracks that have gone global years after their release include CKay’s Love Nwantiti, which found international acclaim via the TikTok platform.
