President Bola Tinubu has reaffirmed his commitment to the revival of the National Sports Commission (NSC) to protect sports administration from bureaucratic delays and vested interest distractions.

The President made the announcement during the official opening ceremony of the 22nd National Sports Festival, tagged Gateway Games Ogun 2024, held in Abeokuta, the Ogun State capital. Represented by Vice President Kashim Shettima, President Tinubu reiterated his administration’s strong commitment to the development of sports as a vital tool for national integration and youth empowerment.

Sport, to us, is a tool for national integration, a rallying ground for patriotism, and a workshop for shaping not just the body, but also the mind and the spirit of our people,” he said.

A New Dawn for Sports Administration

President Tinubu explained that the decision to revive the NSC, nine years after it became inactive, was informed by the need to create an autonomous, innovative, and focused structure that can reposition Nigeria on the global sporting stage.

We have chosen to shield it from bureaucratic interferences and the distractions of vested power interests. We want it to thrive because we recognise its critical place in building a healthier, stronger, and more united Nigeria,” he said.

He noted that Nigeria’s sporting history has been defined by excellence, from Olympic medalists and world-class footballers to boxing champions and athletics stars, all of whom have contributed to the nation’s global reputation.
