Mike Ejeagha Dies at 95

Renowned Nigerian highlife musician and folklorist, Mike Ejeagha, has died at the age of 95.

The iconic artiste passed away on the evening of Friday, 6 June 2025, around 8 p.m., at the 32 Garrison Hospital in Enugu, following a prolonged illness. His death was confirmed by his eldest son, Emma Ejeagha.

Born on 4 April 1930 in Imezi Owa, Ezeagu Local Government Area of Enugu State, Ejeagha was affectionately known as “Gentleman Mike Ejeagha.” He was celebrated for his pioneering role in the development of Igbo highlife music and for using music as a means of preserving traditional folklore and wisdom.

Ejeagha’s musical journey spanned more than six decades, beginning in the 1950s. He rose to national prominence with the release of his first major hit in 1960, coinciding with Nigeria’s independence. His compositions Nrich in proverbs, moral teachings, and Igbo idioms secured his place as one of the most respected figures in Nigerian music history.

Beyond entertainment, Ejeagha was widely regarded as a cultural custodian. His commitment to documenting traditional Igbo music and storytelling led to the preservation of over 300 recordings in the National Archives of Nigeria. Through his music, he educated as much as he entertained.

In 2024, his classic track Ka Esi Le Onye Isi Oche gained renewed popularity among younger audiences, following a viral dance challenge that revived public interest in his work. The resurgence drew widespread tributes from across Nigeria’s entertainment and cultural communities.

Tributes have continued to pour in nationwide, with musicians, cultural figures and fans mourning the passing of a legend whose music transcended generations.

Mike Ejeagha is survived by his children, grandchildren, and a rich musical heritage that continues to inspire.

The family is expected to announce funeral arrangements in due course.
