Party elder Chief Bode George has warned that the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) may expel some of its prominent members at the forthcoming National Executive Council (NEC) meeting scheduled for 27 May.

Speaking on Sunday Politics, a programme on Channels Television, George stated that the NEC is prepared to take firm action against members who no longer uphold the party’s constitution or the principles upon which it was founded.

“Those who cannot abide by the rules and regulations of the party  we can expel them,” he said.

George condemned certain members for prioritising personal ambition over public service, accusing them of deviating from the party’s democratic ideals.

“What is democracy? It is the management of a nation’s resources for the benefit of the people. That is not what they are doing now,” he remarked.

He further noted that the NEC meeting would include a closed-door session aimed at directly addressing the party’s internal challenges.

“We must confront some uncomfortable truths and return to the ideals set by the founding fathers of our party,” he added.

The Wike Factor

Since the 2023 general elections, the PDP has been plagued by deep internal divisions. Rather than consolidating its position as a strong opposition to the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC), the party has struggled with disloyalty and growing factionalism.

A major source of contention has been the conduct of high-profile members openly supporting APC President Bola Tinubu.

among them is the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory and former Governor of Rivers State, Nyesom Wike, who recently pledged his support for President Tinubu’s 2027 re-election bid  despite remaining a PDP member.

Wike’s stance has provoked outrage within the party, with critics accusing the leadership of turning a blind eye to overt acts of disloyalty.

The upcoming NEC meeting on 27 May is expected to be a critical moment for the party as it confronts its internal crisis and considers disciplinary measures.
