Gov. Otti Pledges to Borrow Only When Absolutely Necessary

Governor Alex Otti of Abia State has stated that his administration will only borrow funds to run the state when it is absolutely necessary.

The governor made this commitment in Umuahia on Wednesday during a lecture series marking his two years in office.

Responding to some points raised by the lecturer, Dr Idika Kalu, a former Finance Minister, Otti said borrowing would not be done recklessly, adding that he would only borrow when essential.

The governor emphasised the importance of instilling financial discipline and responsibility within the system to advance the state’s development.

He explained that he had prioritised paying workers and pensioners, finding it more economically sensible to pay them than to keep funds idle in the bank.

“We shall dedicate the remaining two years of this term to institutionalising the reforms that have already begun.

“Together, we will make Abia a centre for transformational ideas; we will remain open to new ideas, as this is the path to continuous growth and progress,” Otti declared.

The governor thanked Dr Kalu for accepting the invitation to deliver the lecture marking the second anniversary of his administration.

Otti said the lecture was organised to allow honest reflection on the state’s progress, recognising achievements and identifying areas for improvement.

In his lecture titled “Two Years of Transformation: Sustaining the Momentum,” the former Finance Minister encouraged the governor to borrow funds to expand projects that would add value to the state.

The octogenarian stated that borrowing was not harmful provided it was done in the best interests of the state.

Dr Kalu also urged the governor to engage the media in major roles within his development efforts, given the media’s power to effect change.

“The media can help revive this nation, so they should be given key roles, not minor ones,” Kalu said.

He praised Governor Otti for the many projects initiated, some already completed and others still ongoing.

He advised the government to always adhere to the rule of law and to set an example by doing things properly and with integrity.

Dr Kalu emphasised the need to punish those who promote impunity, noting that a society where impunity thrives cannot be considered modernised.
