Governor Dapo Abiodun of Ogun State on Sunday sent a high-level delegation to Kano State to commiserate with the government and people over the tragic loss of athletes and officials in a road accident, offering ₦31 million in support.
The victims were returning from the recently concluded National Sports Festival (NSF) hosted in Ogun when the crash occurred on Saturday morning in Kura Local Government Area of Kano State.
According to a statement from Mr Kayode Akinmade, Special Adviser to the Governor on Media and Strategy, Abiodun announced a financial support package of ₦1 million for each bereaved family totalling ₦31 million as an initial measure.
The delegation was led by Ogun’s Deputy Governor, Noimot Salako-Oyedele, and included Secretary to the State Government Tokunbo Talabi, Commissioner for Sports Development Wasiu Isiaka, Executive Secretary of the Gateway Games Local Organising Committee Dr Kweku Tandoh, and Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Sports Lanre Ogunyinka. Also present were Team Ogun coach Idris Oguntayo and two athletes, Atinuke Onabiyi and Ayomide Oyegbade.

They were received in Kano by Deputy Governor Aminu Gwarzo.
Delivering the governor’s message, Salako-Oyedele said: “We are here to express the heartfelt sympathies of the Government and people of Ogun State. This is a devastating loss not only for Kano but for the entire sporting community.”
She also praised the swift response of emergency services and conveyed the governor’s prayers for the recovery of those injured.
In his response, Gwarzo thanked the Ogun delegation for the visit and compassion, adding that Governor Abiodun had personally called on Saturday to offer condolences an act he said demonstrated genuine solidarity.
