The Nigeria Premier Football League (NPFL) will observe a minute’s silence before the remaining fixtures of Matchday 35 this weekend in tribute to the late Otunba Tade Azeez, former President of the Nigeria Referees Association (NRA). Azeez, a key figure in Nigerian football, passed away on Friday afternoon following a brief, undisclosed illness.

The sad news of his death broke shortly after the Matchday 35 fixture between Kano Pillars and Rivers United had already been played. However, NPFL Chief Operating Officer Davidson Owumi confirmed that a minute’s silence will be observed before the start of the remaining fixtures on Sunday.

Azeez was not only a respected referee but also a former Vice Chairman of the Lagos State Football Association (LAFA). He earned a FIFA referee badge before retiring and later took on the role of leading the NRA, where he made significant contributions to the development of football officiating in Nigeria.

Owumi described Azeez’s passing as a significant loss to the entire football community. “We recognise his contributions to the growth of the league and club football over the years, starting as a referee, advancing through the ranks, and eventually offering leadership as NRA President,” he said, expressing his grief over the loss.

The NPFL will particularly miss Azeez’s stabilising presence during some of the league’s trickier fixtures, according to Owumi. He also extended heartfelt condolences to Azeez’s family, friends, and all those who had the privilege of working with the esteemed football administrator.
