Nigeria and Germany have partnered to spearhead a climate-smart housing revolution, with Nigeria now formally recognised as a strategic partner in the Partnership for Energy Efficiency in Buildings (PEEB), a flagship initiative of the German Development Cooperation (GIZ).
The announcement was made by Nigeria’s Minister of Housing and Urban Development, Ahmed Dangiwa, during a meeting in Abuja with a delegation from GIZ led by Dr Karin Jansen, First Secretary and Head of Cooperation.
PEEB builds on the achievements of the Nigerian Energy Support Programme and aims to scale up energy efficiency across the nation’s building sector—an essential component of Nigeria’s commitment to sustainable urban development and energy conservation. The programme emphasises the integration of energy-efficient practices into architectural design and construction processes nationwide.
Minister Dangiwa welcomed the initiative, describing it as aligned with the Ministry’s vision to deliver affordable, climate-resilient, and energy-efficient housing to Nigerians.
He highlighted the construction sector’s substantial role in national energy consumption and emissions, adding that enhancing building efficiency is crucial for meeting Nigeria’s climate commitments and securing a sustainable future for the next generation.
The Minister also referenced the successful implementation of PEEB in other countries, citing Mexico’s green mortgage scheme as a potential model for Nigeria. He proposed a similar initiative via the Federal Mortgage Bank, utilising the National Housing Fund to offer Green Mortgages for energy-efficient homes.
In addition, he pointed to successful examples from Vietnam and Tunisia, emphasising the need for technical expertise, supportive policy frameworks, and dedicated financing to ensure the success of energy efficiency programmes.
