The Nigerian Meteorological Agency (NiMet) and the Agro-Climatic Resilience in Semi-Arid Landscapes (ACReSAL) Project are set to collaborate on the development of a customised Digital Precision Agricultural Extension (DPAE) platform for smallholder farmers in northern Nigeria.
During a meeting at NiMet’s headquarters in Abuja, the National Project Coordinator of ACReSAL, Mr Mukhtar Tanko, briefed the Director-General and Chief Executive Officer of NiMet, Professor Charles Anosike, on the proposed collaboration.
Mr Tanko noted that ACReSAL recognises NiMet as a key stakeholder in the creation, deployment, and long-term sustainability of the DPAE platform.

He explained that Sub-Component B2 of the project is designed to support farmers at the household level in adopting climate-smart, rainfed agricultural practices.
“Achieving this goal requires the use of weather data to optimise farm management and enhance agricultural productivity,” he stated.
He further disclosed that the Federal Government, through the ACReSAL Project, intends to design, pilot, and implement a precision digital agriculture extension system in northern Nigeria. This initiative forms part of a broader strategy to improve farmers’ access to timely extension and advisory services.
The proposed digital platform will bring together and coordinate key actors in the agricultural value chain, including farmers, public extension agents, input suppliers, traders, and processors.
