The Chairman/CEO of the Nigerians in Diaspora Commission (NiDCOM), Hon. Abike Dabiri-Erewa, has congratulated four Nigerian-born politicians in the United Kingdom on their recent election victories and historic appointments, describing their success as a testament to the excellence and resilience of Nigerians in the diaspora.
In a congratulatory statement, Hon. Dabiri-Erewa hailed the election of Dr. Adekunle Osibogun, Princess Opeyemi Bright, Councillor Jason Utitofon Jackson, and Councillor Sunny Lambe, acknowledging their achievements as “record-breaking milestones” that reflect their dedication to public service and the high regard with which Nigerians are held globally.
Dr. Adekunle Osibogun, who has lived in Buckingham since 2004, was recently elected Deputy Mayor of Buckingham. He also serves as a Councillor on both the Buckingham Town Council (representing Buckingham South) and the Buckinghamshire County Council (representing Buckingham East). His elevation, according to Dabiri-Erewa, highlights his years of unwavering commitment to community development.
Also earning national pride is Princess Opeyemi Bright, who made history as the youngest Mayor of the London Borough of Barking & Dagenham. At just 29 years old, she becomes one of the youngest individuals ever to hold such a position in the UK, symbolising the rising influence of young Nigerians in politics abroad.
Cllr. Jason Utitofon Jackson achieved a notable first by becoming the first Black Mayor of Islington. His election was widely celebrated as a landmark event in the borough’s history, further illustrating the growing representation of Nigerians and people of African descent in the British political space.
Equally distinguished is Cllr. Sunny Lambe, who was appointed Mayor of Southwark following years of service as a Councillor. His elevation was lauded by NiDCOM as recognition of his steadfast dedication and impact on the local community.

Hon. Dabiri-Erewa expressed confidence that the new officeholders would bring integrity and innovation to their roles while continuing to make Nigeria proud. She encouraged them to remain exemplary ambassadors of the country, and offered prayers for wisdom, strength, and guidance in the discharge of their duties.
“These milestones demonstrate the growing influence of Nigerians in the diaspora and their increasing contributions to governance and civic leadership in their host countries,” she said.
NiDCOM reaffirmed its commitment to supporting Nigerians abroad and celebrating their achievements, noting that the success of these individuals enhances the nation’s global image and strengthens diplomatic goodwill.
The Commission continues to monitor developments among the Nigerian diaspora with pride, encouraging more citizens to participate actively in democratic processes wherever they reside.
