UNESCO has reiterated its commitment to safeguarding Africa’s cultural and natural heritage, calling for more robust protection measures across the continent. This renewed call comes in response to growing concerns over the threats posed by rapid urbanisation, inadequate legal frameworks, and climate change to Africa’s heritage sites.
Africa is home to a significant portion of the world’s cultural and natural treasures, with the continent accounting for approximately 12.26% of global World Heritage Sites. However, many of these sites are under increasing threat due to a combination of environmental stresses, such as desertification and flooding, and insufficient protection laws.
In light of these challenges, UNESCO has intensified efforts to address the growing vulnerabilities facing African heritage. From May 6 to 9, UNESCO, in collaboration with the Kenyan government and the African World Heritage Fund, organised a conference in Nairobi aimed at exploring solutions for the protection and management of heritage sites across Africa. The event brought together policymakers, scholars, and cultural advocates from around the world to discuss strategies for strengthening heritage preservation across the continent.

During the conference, experts highlighted the importance of empowering local communities to take on a central role in the stewardship of their heritage. This approach is seen as essential not only for the preservation of Africa’s rich and diverse cultural history but also for fostering sustainable development and creating job opportunities within these communities.
UNESCO’s renewed call underscores the urgent need for concerted efforts at local, national, and international levels to protect these invaluable heritage sites. By strengthening legal frameworks, promoting community involvement, and addressing environmental threats, UNESCO aims to ensure that Africa’s heritage is preserved for future generations, enhancing its cultural and economic impact on the global stage.
