Kano State Abba Kabir Yusuf, has presented a landmark N1.368 trillion budget proposal for the 2026 fiscal year, marking the first trillion-naira budget in the state’s history and reflecting the growing trend of expansive subnational budgets across Nigeria.
The proposal, tagged “Budget of Infrastructure, Inclusive Growth and Sustainable Development,” represents a major increase from the N935.1 billion approved for 2025 an upward difference of more than N432 billion.
Presenting the document to the Kano State House of Assembly, Governor Yusuf said the budget was crafted to consolidate ongoing reforms, complete legacy projects, and fast-track new development priorities aligned with national socioeconomic goals.
According to the governor, capital expenditure remains the backbone of the budget, with N934.6 billion equivalent to 68 percent earmarked for growth-driven projects. Recurrent expenditure accounts for N433.4 billion, representing 32 percent of the total budget.
Education receives the largest allocation of N405.3 billion, amounting to 30 percent of the entire budget. Yusuf said the focus on education aligns with national efforts to strengthen human capital and close learning gaps.
Infrastructure is allocated N346.2 billion (25 percent), while the health sector receives N212.2 billion (16 percent), reinforcing the administration’s commitment to improving social services.

Other key allocations target agriculture, water resources, security, commerce and investment, youth development, and climate-related initiatives.
Governor Yusuf described the 2026 proposal as a continuation of his administration’s development blueprint.
“As we approach the final stretch of our four-year mandate, the 2026 Budget represents a covenant with the people, a commitment to consolidate gains and complete key projects,” he said.
He noted that more than 80 percent of the government’s development agenda had already been implemented since 2023, touching “virtually all sectors” of the state’s economy.
“This budget is bold but realistic. It reflects our desire to transform Kano into a resilient, inclusive, and prosperous state,” he added.
The Speaker of the Kano State House of Assembly, Jibrin Falgore, assured that lawmakers would fast-track the legislative process to ensure timely passage and effective implementation.
“With this budget, we are committed to enabling development that benefits the people of Kano and contributes to the nation’s broader economic advancement,” he said.
