An International Monetary Fund (IMF) staff team is expected to visit Uganda in September for further negotiations on a new financial support programme, the Fund’s resident representative in the country, Sébastien Walker, said.
Uganda’s previous IMF programme ended in 2024, after which the East African country requested a new arrangement. However, the two sides have yet to reach an agreement.
Walker said discussions so far had been constructive but more work was needed before a deal could be concluded.
“While discussions were constructive, further progress is needed to reach an agreement. Staff is planning a programme negotiation mission in September.”
Uganda’s economy has maintained strong growth and is expected to receive further momentum from the anticipated start of crude oil production.
The planned September mission is expected to provide an opportunity for both sides to make further progress towards a new support programme.
