The United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF) has appointed Ms. Wafaa Saeed Abdelatef as its new Country Representative in Nigeria.
In a statement signed by Communication Specialist Susan Akila, the organisation described Ms. Abdelatef as a seasoned humanitarian and development professional with more than 20 years of international experience. She is expected to bring strong leadership and a deep commitment to advancing the welfare of children and communities across Nigeria.
Before taking up her new position, Ms. Abdelatef served as UNICEF Representative in Somalia, where she made significant progress in promoting child rights and well-being amid persistent humanitarian challenges.
Her distinguished career includes senior roles within UNICEF, OCHA, and the World Food Programme (WFP), with postings in Sudan, Indonesia, Pakistan, Syria, and Ethiopia. She also held key global positions with OCHA at its headquarters in New York and Geneva.

Ms. Abdelatef began her professional journey in Sudan, working on projects in the private sector, academia, and non-governmental organisations, focusing particularly on displaced populations and environmental sustainability.
She holds a Master’s degree in Architecture from Katholieke Universiteit Leuven in Belgium, a Master of Science in Physical Planning from the University of Khartoum, and a Bachelor of Science in Architecture.
Her leadership in Somalia was widely recognised, particularly for her work in programme management, strategic planning, and coordination in both emergency and development settings.
UNICEF Nigeria expressed confidence that Ms. Abdelatef’s vast experience and unwavering dedication will strengthen the organisation’s mission and broaden its impact across the country.
