The World Health Organisation (WHO) has nominated Professor Mohamed Janabi as the next Regional Director for its African Region.
According to a statement by the organisation, the nomination took place during a special session of the WHO Regional Committee for Africa, convened in Geneva ahead of the World Health Assembly on Sunday.
“The special session, organised by member states of the WHO African Region, was held to elect a new Regional Director following the sudden and untimely passing of Dr Faustine Ndugulile, the Regional Director-elect, in November 2024,” the statement read.
Other candidates considered for the role included Dr N’da Konan Michel Yao (nominated by Côte d’Ivoire), Dr Mohammed Dramé (nominated by Guinea), and Professor Moustafa Mijiyawa (nominated by Togo).
Janabi’s nomination will be submitted for formal appointment by the WHO Executive Board at its 157th session, scheduled to take place from 28 to 29 May in Geneva.
The newly appointed Regional Director is expected to assume office thereafter for a five-year term, with the possibility of reappointment for a second term.
In his acceptance remarks, Professor Janabi expressed his commitment to improving the health and wellbeing of people across the region.
“Thank you for the trust you have placed in me. I will not let you down. Your support reflects our shared determination to build a healthier, stronger, and more united Africa,” he said.
“As we confront challenges ranging from infectious and noncommunicable diseases to climate change and limited health financing, we must draw on Africa’s resilience and unity.”
WHO Director-General, Dr Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, congratulated Janabi on his nomination and commended the other candidates for their efforts.
“I warmly congratulate Professor Janabi on his nomination as Regional Director for Africa, and I extend congratulations to the United Republic of Tanzania as well,” he said.
“I also wish to thank Dr Yao, Dr Dramé, and Professor Mijiyawa for their strong campaigns for this demanding yet vital role.”
Dr Ghebreyesus noted that Janabi would assume leadership at a critical moment for both the African Region and WHO globally.
“We value his experience and expertise as we work together to address ongoing challenges and strengthen the organisation’s future effectiveness. I look forward to his formal appointment by the Executive Board and to collaborating with him in our mission for a healthier, safer, and fairer Africa,” he added.

He also expressed gratitude to Dr Chikwe Ihekweazu, Acting WHO Regional Director for Africa, for his leadership during the transitional period following the conclusion of Dr Matshidiso Moeti’s term.
In his remarks, Dr Ihekweazu congratulated Professor Janabi and extended his best wishes.
“Congratulations, Professor Janabi, on your election. This reflects the confidence member states have placed in your leadership.
“The African Region has made notable progress in health, but significant and complex challenges remain. You can count on my full support, and that of the entire WHO Africa team, as you take on this vital role to serve our people,” Ihekweazu said.
