President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has reaffirmed Nigeria’s determination to play a leading role in shaping Africa’s development agenda as he joined other world leaders at the Ninth Tokyo International Conference on African Development (TICAD9) in Yokohama, Japan.
In a post on his verified X handle, @officialABAT, on Tuesday evening, President Tinubu emphasised that the summit, which opened this week, is focused on strengthening Africa–Japan relations, attracting sustainable investment, and fostering innovation to shape the continent’s future.
“Arrived in Tokyo yesterday for the 9th TICAD Summit. This summit is about strengthening Africa–Japan ties, attracting sustainable investments, and unlocking innovation to benefit our people. Nigeria is at the table, not as a bystander, but as a leader shaping solutions for Africa’s future,” the President wrote.
TICAD, established by Japan in 1993 as a partnership framework, brings together African nations, Japan, international organisations, and development partners to deliberate on strategies for sustainable growth and cooperation.

The ninth edition in Yokohama is drawing attention to Africa’s role in global economic recovery, with particular emphasis on innovation-driven solutions, infrastructure expansion, and stronger trade partnerships.
President Tinubu’s participation underscores Nigeria’s drive to strengthen its leadership in Africa’s economic diplomacy, while also pursuing fresh opportunities for investment and innovation under his administration’s Renewed Hope Agenda.
The summit, holding from 20 to 22 August, is expected to deliver significant new commitments aimed at harnessing innovation—particularly digital technologies to transform Africa’s future, attract sustainable investments aligned with long-term development goals, and accelerate regional integration through enhanced infrastructure.
