Pope Leo on Sunday condemned the continuing violence in Sudan and called for renewed dialogue and stronger humanitarian efforts to assist civilians caught in the conflict.
Speaking during his Angelus address at St. Peter’s Square, the pontiff said he was “deeply saddened” by the suffering of the Sudanese people and urged both sides to “choose peace over destruction.”
He appealed to the international community and aid organisations to intensify relief operations and ensure that food, water and medical assistance reach those in need.
“May weapons fall silent, and may dialogue prevail for the good of all Sudanese people,” the pope said.
Fighting between the army and the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces (RSF) has displaced millions since it erupted last year, with severe shortages of basic supplies reported in Khartoum and Darfur.
