Former Super Eagles first-choice goalkeeper, Peter Rufai, has died. He passed away on Thursday after a prolonged illness at the age of 61.
Rufai was widely regarded as one of the best goalkeepers Nigeria has ever produced. He was a key part of the Super Eagles during the 1990s. He featured in key squads :
-
1994 USA World Cup – Peter Rufai was Nigeria’s first-choice goalkeeper and played every minute as Nigeria topped their group and reached the Round of 16
-
1998 France World Cup – Again Nigeria’s No. 1, Rufai featured prominently throughout the tournament, including the opening group matches against Spain and Bulgaria, and the knockout game vs. Denmark.
-
1994 AFCON (Tunisia) – Rufai was part of the squad that won the tournament and served as the starting goalkeeper
Rufai’s death comes on a day the football world is also mourning the passing of Liverpool forward Diogo Jota, who reportedly died in a car crash in Spain earlier in the day, alongside his brother.
