The Nigerian Society of Engineers (NSE) has graduated more than 100 young and senior engineers following the completion of its specialised Continuing Professional Development (CPD) training.

Mrs Margaret Oguntala, President and Chairman-in-Council of the NSE, disclosed this during the graduation ceremony held on Tuesday in Abuja.

She explained that the training, organised by the Department of Professional Development in collaboration with Techlytics and Citadel for Technological and Engineering Development Limited (CITED), was designed to enhance skills and bridge knowledge gaps among members.

“This training was thoughtfully designed in two categories to address the needs of different age groups and experience levels,” she said.

“The first category, tailored for engineers above the age of 35, focused on cutting-edge topics such as Building Information Modelling (BIM), Artificial Intelligence (AI), and the Internet of Things (IoT).

“While the second category, designed for our younger engineers under 35, offered vital training in Data Analytics and Cybersecurity, equipping them with the tools required to thrive in today’s data-driven world.”

According to Oguntala, 252 engineers registered for the senior category, out of which 119 were selected on a first-come, first-served basis, and 64 participants successfully completed and passed the training. Similarly, 211 young engineers registered, and 53 participants completed the programme successfully.

She urged the graduates to put their newly acquired knowledge to practical use and face professional challenges with confidence.

“Let this be a stepping stone to greater innovation, deeper problem-solving and continued excellence,” she said.
“Remember, continuous learning is not a choice it is a necessity in today’s dynamic world.”

Oguntala also encouraged participants to stay engaged with the Society, stressing NSE’s commitment to ongoing support through mentorship and access to professional development resources.

She reaffirmed the Society’s dedication to capacity-building initiatives aimed at empowering members, particularly young engineers, to become globally competitive and employable.

The NSE President expressed appreciation to the Oil Producers Trade Section (OPTS) of the Lagos Chamber of Commerce and Industry (LCCI), the main sponsor of the training, as well as the technical partners, Techlytics and CITED.

Chairman of the NSE Professional Development Board, Mr Okodugha Aluya, said the training for Cohorts One and Two aligned with the President’s vision. He revealed that no fewer than 10,000 members across all categories were expected to benefit from similar programmes in the current year.

“The upcoming programme will offer graduate members access to scholarships for master’s and PhD programmes in relevant disciplines,” he said.
“Furthermore, under the able leadership of the President, we are working towards facilitating on-the-job training opportunities with selected engineering firms.”

Also speaking at the event, Mr Gwueke Ajaifia, Executive Director of OPTS, emphasised the importance of a strong engineering practice in supporting national economic development. He said the sponsorship of the training was aimed at equipping Nigerian engineers with the competence to play key roles in nation-building.

President of the Council for the Regulation of Engineering in Nigeria (COREN), Professor Sadiq Abubakar, represented by the Registrar, Professor Okorie Uche, underscored the importance of CPD in ensuring engineers remain competent, relevant, and employable in a fast-evolving profession.

He encouraged Nigerian engineers to embrace digital transformation and data literacy to remain current with global technological trends.

Professor Abubakar also called for sustained collaboration between COREN and the NSE to enhance engineering education, training, and practice in Nigeria.

Nimot Muili and Emeka Ibeh emerged as the overall best participants in the senior and young engineer categories respectively. Both commended the NSE for the opportunity and pledged to make effective use of the skills acquired.
