The Nigerian Government, through the Ministry of Communications, Innovation and Digital Economy, has commenced the process of adopting standardised national websites for all public institutions.
The initiative seeks to establish a unified digital identity across government platforms, enhance accessibility, and ensure that websites adhere to international standards in terms of design, functionality, and security.
To facilitate this, the Ministry convened a co-creation group tasked with recommending essential features for the new standardised websites. These recommendations will be subject to review and approval by relevant stakeholders.
This development was announced during the April 2025 edition of DevsInGovernment, held in Abuja and themed ‘Designing Together: Building a Unified Look for Government Websites.
The Director-General of the National Information Technology Development Agency (NITDA), Kashifu Inuwa, emphasised the need for collaboration among public sector stakeholders to advance the initiative.
Representing the NITDA Director-General, Mr Saliu AbdulKareem explained that the proposed websites would incorporate national colours, ministry logos, and the Nigerian coat of arms. He noted that the approach would be bottom-up, not limited to the executive level.
“These websites will have a distinctly Nigerian identity. More importantly, they will help users identify authentic government platforms. With uniformity and conformity, citizens can recognise legitimate Nigerian government websites,” he stated.
“The idea is to begin with contributions from various sources, create a framework, and then have that framework reviewed and implemented at a higher level.”

Ms Nafisa Isah, Special Adviser on Digital Transformation at the Ministry, who led the co-create project, said the goal is to foster trust in digital government transactions.
“This is the Nigerian Web Design Standards Project – a collaborative initiative between the Ministry and NITDA. It aims to establish consistent principles, design frameworks, and guidelines for all government websites,” she explained.
“This effort will provide better accessibility and enhance user experience across public digital platforms. Ultimately, it will foster transparency, accountability, and improved public service delivery across Ministries, Departments and Agencies (MDAs).”
The standardisation initiative is expected to significantly enhance citizens’ access to government services and information, thereby promoting good governance and accountability.
It is also anticipated to positively impact Nigeria’s digital economy by improving the overall user experience and advancing digital inclusion.
