Nigeria’s Flying Eagles began their 2025 U-20 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) campaign with a narrow but well-earned 1–0 victory over a determined Tunisian side on Thursday, 1 May, at the 30 June Air Defence Stadium in Cairo.
The decisive goal came in the 38th minute courtesy of Auwal Ibrahim, who marked his tournament debut in style. Ibrahim latched onto a precise through ball from Odinaka Okoro and calmly slotted past the Tunisian goalkeeper to hand Nigeria the lead.
Tunisia started the match brightly, with winger Khalil Ayari creating early problems for the Nigerian defence. However, captain Daniel Bameyi led a disciplined backline that held firm throughout the contest. Goalkeeper Ebenezer Harcourt was particularly impressive, making a series of crucial saves—including a vital stop in the 87th minute to preserve the lead.

In midfield, Divine Oliseh and Clinton Jephta played key roles in dictating the tempo of the match, offering both defensive cover and attacking support as Nigeria maintained their advantage.
The match was a physically intense encounter, with six yellow cards issued—three apiece to both sides—as tempers flared in the latter stages.
With the win, Nigeria now sits at the top of Group B and will look to maintain their momentum when they face Morocco in their next group-stage fixture on Sunday, 4 May 2025.
The Flying Eagles, who are seeking their eighth continental title, will take confidence from this gritty performance as they continue their push for U-20 AFCON glory.
