The Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Executive Committee has approved the award of a contract for the upgrade of streetlights along the Nnamdi Azikiwe Expressway (Ring Road I).

This was disclosed by the Acting Executive Secretary of the Federal Capital Development Authority (FCDA), Mr Richard Dauda, while briefing journalists following the committee’s 14th meeting, chaired by the FCT Minister, Nyesom Wike.

Engr Dauda stated that the streetlight upgrade was one of seven FCDA memos approved during the meeting.

He explained that the project entails replacing outdated streetlights along the 14-kilometre, ten-lane expressway stretching from Maitama to Gudu.

“If you travel along that road at night, you’ll notice that large sections are shrouded in darkness. The current streetlights were installed nearly 15 years ago,” he said. “The project was originally completed between 2005 and 2006, and the lighting system has since become obsolete and ineffective.”

He noted that the upgrade was necessary to incorporate newer street lighting technologies.

A hybrid lighting system will be installed to improve visibility, enhance road safety, and boost nighttime security along the expressway.

The Chief of Staff to the FCT Minister, Mr Chidi Amadi, added that 13 memos were submitted for consideration at the meeting, of which nine were reviewed and approved.

According to Amadi, the approved memos aim to accelerate infrastructural development and improve the overall quality of the capital city’s built environment.
