Nigeria and Egypt have taken a major step toward strengthening aviation ties with the signing of a landmark Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) and an Enhanced Bilateral Air Services Agreement (BASA) in Abuja.
The agreement was formalised by Nigeria’s Minister of Aviation and Aerospace Development, Festus Keyamo, and Egypt’s Minister of Foreign Affairs, Dr. Badr Abdellatty, during a ceremony that underscored the growing cooperation between both nations in the aviation sector.
Initially conceived during the 2024 International Civil Aviation Negotiations (ICAN) Conference, the agreement marks a pivotal milestone in civil aviation relations between Nigeria and Egypt.
Speaking at the signing, Minister Keyamo described the agreement as a “strategic breakthrough” that reflects a shared commitment to enhancing connectivity, boosting tourism, expanding trade routes, and deepening technical cooperation.
“This agreement is not only a fulfilment of the engagements we started during ICAN 2024 but also a bold step toward enhancing air connectivity, boosting tourism, promoting trade, and fostering knowledge transfer in aviation management and infrastructure,” Keyamo said.
The Enhanced BASA provides expanded route access and greater operational flexibility for designated carriers from both countries, paving the way for increased flights and broader air travel options. The accompanying MoU includes provisions for technical cooperation, aviation training, and infrastructure development.

Egypt Sees Nigeria as Strategic Partner
In his remarks, Dr. Abdellatty expressed Egypt’s strong interest in fostering a “lasting and mutually beneficial partnership” with Nigeria, particularly in sectors where aviation serves as a catalyst for broader economic growth. He commended Nigeria’s proactive aviation reforms under Keyamo’s leadership, describing the collaboration as vital for regional integration and development.
“Egypt views Nigeria as a strategic partner on the continent,” Abdellatty noted, while praising the mutual vision to modernise aviation systems and create new investment opportunities.
A Vision for Shared Progress
Both ministers reaffirmed their governments’ commitment to fully implement the provisions of the agreements, emphasizing mutual respect, economic development, and shared progress as core principles.
The signing ceremony was attended by senior officials from the Federal Ministry of Aviation and Aerospace Development, including Permanent Secretary Dr. Ibrahim Kana, and representatives from the Egyptian diplomatic mission in Nigeria.
This development is part of Nigeria’s broader strategy to reposition its aviation sector through enhanced international cooperation, modern regulatory frameworks, and increased private sector participation in infrastructure projects.
