In line with President Bola Tinubu’s directive to open a direct air route between Nigeria and South America, Minister of Aviation and Aerospace Development, Festus Keyamo, has arrived in Brazil on a strategic working visit.

Keyamo, who landed in Brazil on 5 May, was accompanied by the Director General of the Nigerian Civil Aviation Authority (NCAA), Captain Chris Najomo, along with representatives of Nigerian airline operators.

According to a press statement by Tunde Moshood, Special Adviser on Media and Communications to the minister, the visit centres on high-level engagements with Brazilian authorities and global aircraft manufacturer Embraer.

The minister and his delegation held extensive talks with officials at Embraer’s headquarters in São José dos Campos, São Paulo State. Discussions focused on exploring partnerships to strengthen Nigeria’s aviation sector, with a particular emphasis on aircraft acquisition, leasing opportunities, and access to credible financing options.

We had extensive discussions with Embraer on how they can support our aviation sector with their vast network of lessors and financial institutions. The goal is to empower Nigerian operators with the tools and partnerships necessary for growth and expansion,” Keyamo said.

The visit continues in Brasilia, where Keyamo is expected to meet with Brazil’s Minister of Ports and Airports, Sílvio Costa Filho. Their discussions will centre on reviewing and amending the existing Bilateral Air Services Agreement (BASA) between Nigeria and Brazil to facilitate the immediate launch of direct flight operations.

The initiative is a cornerstone of President Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda, aimed at enhancing regional connectivity, deepening international trade, and strengthening diplomatic and economic relations between Nigeria and South America.
