The Comptroller-General of the Nigeria Customs Service, Bashir Adewale Adeniyi, has stressed the need to adopt artificial intelligence and disruptive technologies in modern customs operations to enhance efficiency, transparency, and institutional accountability.
Adeniyi stated this while delivering the keynote address at the 4th Biennial International Conference organised by the Faculty of Communication and Information Sciences of the University of Ilorin in Ilorin, the Kwara State capital.
The conference, organised in collaboration with the Faculty of Philology, RUDN University, Russia, and themed “Disruptive Technology: Human and Artificial Intelligence in the Digital Economy”, brought together scholars, policymakers, technocrats, and academics from within and outside Nigeria to examine the impact of emerging technologies on governance, trade, and global institutions.
The Comptroller-General noted that technological innovation had transformed the way customs administrations process information, monitor trade patterns, and make operational decisions.

He said the integration of artificial intelligence and digital systems into customs operations had improved revenue collection, trade facilitation, and border security across the world.
Adeniyi added that the Nigeria Customs Service remained committed to aligning its operations with global best practices through technology-driven reforms and capacity development.
The Customs boss also underscored the importance of synergy among government agencies, financial institutions, auditors, policymakers, and legislative stakeholders in strengthening Nigeria’s economic and revenue systems.
The Comptroller-General was earlier received at Ilorin International Airport by senior officers of the Kwara Area Command and representatives of sister security and revenue-generating agencies in the state.
He later visited the Kwara Area Command headquarters, where he was briefed on operational activities, enforcement efforts, and revenue performance.
Adeniyi commended officers and men of the command for their professionalism, dedication, and commitment to the core mandates of the Service.
He also inspected the government warehouse housing seized and forfeited items, where he emphasised accountability, transparency, and proper documentation in the management of government assets.
The Acting Area Controller of the Kwara Area Command, Deputy Comptroller Najeem Oguniyi, described the visit as a morale booster for officers and a reaffirmation of the Service’s commitment to excellence, integrity, and effective public service delivery.
