The Ministry of Foreign Affairs on Sunday joined fellow African Union (AU) member states in commemorating Africa Day 2025, marking 62 years since the founding of the Organisation of African Unity (OAU), now the AU.
In a statement issued by the Ministry’s Spokesperson, Kimiebi Ebienfa, the Minister of Foreign Affairs, Ambassador Yusuf Tuggar, applauded the AU for consistently providing a platform to pursue the continent’s aspirations and uphold the vision of its founding fathers.

This year’s celebration, themed “Justice for Africans and People of African Descent Through Reparations”, aligns closely with Nigeria’s commitment to continental unity, sustainable development, and shared prosperity, the minister said.
“Africa Day serves as a powerful reminder of our collective heritage, shared struggles, and hopes for a peaceful, integrated, and economically robust Africa,” Tuggar stated.
He affirmed that under the capable leadership of President Bola Tinubu, Nigeria remains committed to the AU’s Agenda 2063, especially in areas such as democracy, good governance, youth empowerment, and regional security.

“As a strong proponent of African solidarity, Nigeria continues to support initiatives that promote intra-African trade, technological advancement, and climate resilience in line with the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA) and other transformative AU frameworks,” he added.
Tuggar further praised progress made across Africa in sectors such as education, healthcare, and infrastructure, while calling for strengthened collaboration to address persistent challenges including conflict, poverty, and inequality.
“As Africa advances in various fields, Nigeria urges deeper partnerships among African countries and the global community to amplify Africa’s voice on the world stage,” the statement read.
The minister also called for a unified effort among AU member states to drive the continent’s socio-economic development.
“On this significant occasion, we celebrate the resilience and ingenuity of the African people particularly our dynamic youth, who represent the continent’s promising future.
“As proud Africans, we must renew our commitment to building a continent grounded in unity, innovation, and shared prosperity,” he concluded.
