The Minister of Women Affairs, Imaan Sulaiman-Ibrahim, has called for greater commitment and proactive efforts from Nigerian women towards inclusive governance, economic participation, and national development.
She made this appeal at a One-Day Women’s Town Hall Meeting and Citizens’ Engagement held on Wednesday in Abuja.
Speaking under the theme “Accelerating Women’s Voices in National Development,” Sulaiman-Ibrahim urged women to take ownership of their societal roles and work collectively to effect meaningful change.
“The reason we are here is because we desire the best for ourselves, for Nigerian women, our communities, and our families,” she said.
The Minister emphasised the importance of the proposed special reserve seats bill before the National Assembly, which seeks to guarantee equitable representation of women in governance.
She stressed that women must be strategic, united, and forward-thinking in their pursuit of political and economic empowerment.
“We are the voting strength of this country; we, along with our children.
“That empowers us to negotiate effectively because we stand by our words; we must become masters of negotiation.
“We need to strengthen our mechanisms and mentor one another. The days when five women contest one seat and split the votes are over.”
Mrs Hauwa Ibrahim, wife of the Ona of Abaji and President of the FCT Traditional Rulers’ Wives Association, praised the collaborative and inclusive nature of the engagement, highlighting the necessity of women working together to bring about sustainable change.
“She does not merely discuss policies; she invites others to be part of the solution. Collaboration ensures efforts are not wasted.
“She encourages women to enter policy-making spaces not just symbolically, but to genuinely influence government decisions and actions.”
She noted that the Minister’s initiatives resonate with traditional institutions and women leaders nationwide, affirming that collaboration and shared responsibility are essential for progress.

Dr Adedayo Benjamins-Laniyi, Mandate Secretary of the FCT Women Affairs Secretariat, expressed optimism regarding the progress achieved under the current administration and the opportunities available to women in the Federal Capital Territory.
“As the pioneer Mandate Secretary for the FCT, I echo the Minister’s call to action. Every woman has a vital role to play, and it is clear that much work remains.
“For some time, we have operated quietly behind the scenes; now is the moment for bold action and tangible results.”
Benjamins-Laniyi commended the Minister’s leadership and inspiring vision, which encourages all women to unite and pursue common goals.
Mrs Ruth Agbo, President of the Association of Women in Trade and Agriculture (AWITA), lauded the resilience and determination of Nigerian women, asserting they are well placed to drive agricultural productivity and trade growth.
She, however, stressed the need for equipment and support to enable women to fully realise this potential.
“In the coming years, Nigeria will experience surplus production because women are ready to farm and traders are prepared to engage in commerce. Women are ready to contribute significantly to the country.
“We simply appeal for the provision of equipment that will enhance our work.
“We call on stakeholders to supply the necessary tools and resources to empower women to fully contribute to national development.”
Dr Maryam Keshinro, Permanent Secretary of the Federal Ministry of Women Affairs, stated that the engagement demonstrated a firm resolve and dedication among Nigerian women to take control of their destinies.
Keshinro added that the ideas and commitments shared would be translated into concrete actions, propelling Nigerian women to new levels of influence and impact.
