The Kano State Government has restated its commitment to press freedom, constructive engagement with journalists, and the consolidation of democratic values in the state.

Director General, Media and Publicity, Sanusi Bature Dawakin Tofa, made this known while receiving the newly elected leadership of the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ), Kano Correspondents’ Chapel, during a courtesy visit to Government House.

Led by its new Chairman, Murtala Adewale of The Guardian Newspapers, the executives were welcomed by Bature, who congratulated them on their election. He emphasised that the administration of Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf regards the media as a vital pillar in nation-building and democratic consolidation.

“We sincerely appreciate the role of the Correspondents’ Chapel in bridging the communication gap between the government and the people. Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf is media-friendly and will continue to welcome constructive criticism that promotes good governance and public accountability,” Bature said.

He assured the chapel of unhindered access to information for all accredited journalists operating in Kano, stressing the importance of mutual trust and professionalism in government–media relations.

Responding, Adewale commended the state government for its sustained partnership with the press and pledged that the new leadership would uphold journalistic ethics and objectivity.

“We are committed to ensuring accuracy, fairness, and professionalism in our coverage. Stronger collaboration between the government and the media is vital to facilitate timely information flow and promote understanding of state policies and programmes,” he said.

The meeting also served as a platform for dialogue on strengthening media capacity, improving access to credible information, and fostering a more collaborative relationship between journalists and the state government.
