The Attorney General of the Federation and Minister of Justice, Lateef Fagbemi, SAN, has presented a comprehensive report detailing the achievements of the Federal Ministry of Justice between October 2024 and May 2025. The report highlights significant reforms, legal successes, and coordinated enforcement efforts.

Speaking at a quarterly Stakeholder Engagement in Abuja, Fagbemi reaffirmed the Ministry’s dedication to expanding access to justice, improving prosecutorial processes, and strengthening legal frameworks through strategic collaboration with law enforcement agencies and the Office of the National Security Adviser.

Key achievements outlined in the report include:

  • Securing over 1,300 convictions for a variety of criminal offences.

  • Recovering assets worth $52.88 million, of which $50 million was allocated to a renewable energy initiative intended to benefit 17.5 million Nigerians, with the remainder directed towards counter-terrorism training.

  • Delivering thousands of legal aid services nationwide, including assistance at police stations and outreach to correctional facilities.

Fagbemi also reported significant progress in the prosecution of intellectual property violations. The Nigerian Copyright Commission confiscated pirated materials valued at more than ₦400 million during 120 enforcement operations. Additionally, the Commission introduced free legal aid for authors, established a mediation centre, and implemented Alternative Dispute Resolution (ADR) mechanisms.

The report further detailed achievements across several federal agencies:

  • The National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) secured 1,056 drug-related convictions.

  • The National Agency for the Prohibition of Trafficking in Persons (NAPTIP) recorded 37 convictions in human trafficking cases.

  • The Legal Aid Council resolved more than 3,800 legal matters, supported 637 police interventions, and conducted 760 visits to correctional centres, assisting thousands of detainees.

In the realm of cybercrime, the Ministry established a Joint Case Team to integrate prosecutors into investigative processes, and is continuously updating relevant legislation to reflect global best practices.

Fagbemi also reported six convictions related to sexual and gender-based violence. He noted revisions to the Violence Against Persons Prohibition (VAPP) Act, alongside the establishment of new referral centres and guidelines for addressing gender-based violence in schools.

Speaking at the event, the Solicitor General and Permanent Secretary, Beatrice Jedy-Agba, stated that the engagement aimed not only to showcase reform milestones but also to promote transparency and enhance public awareness of developments within the justice sector.

This is an opportunity to inform citizens of critical reforms, initiatives, and interventions grounded in the principles of equity, inclusion, and the rule of law,” Jedy-Agba remarked.
