The Iraqi Civil Aviation Authority (ICAA) on Tuesday announced the reopening of its airspace to international flights, citing improved security conditions following days of heightened tension between Israel and Iran.

In a statement, the ICAA said the decision was taken after a comprehensive assessment of the security situation and consultations with both national and international authorities.

ICAA President Bangin Rekani was quoted as saying the move was based on enhanced security and Iraq’s readiness to maintain the highest standards of air traffic control and safety for overflying aircraft.

He added that reopening the country’s airspace would strengthen Iraq’s strategic geographical role as a vital air corridor between East and West, helping airlines reduce both flight time and fuel consumption.

Iraq had closed its airspace to international traffic in response to the outbreak of the Israel-Iran conflict on 13 June.
