Governor Bassey Otu of Cross River State has sworn in Mr Egbung Odama as the acting Chairman of Bekwarra Local Government Area, urging him to promote unity and peace within the council.
The swearing-in followed the suspension of the elected chairman, Mrs Theresa Ushie, by the Cross River State House of Assembly. She was suspended for 90 days following a petition by the local legislature alleging administrative shortcomings
Speaking at the ceremony held in Calabar on Monday, Governor Otu also charged Odama to work closely with community stakeholders and align with the legislative objectives of the council.

He stressed that discord at the grassroots posed a serious threat to effective governance and the delivery of public services.
Otu reiterated his administration’s dedication to “people-first, service-oriented leadership across the state.”
In his response, the newly sworn-in acting chairman pledged to lead with transparency, urgency, and inclusivity.
He thanked the governor for the confidence placed in him and promised to convene a stakeholders’ meeting to foster unity and drive developmental efforts.
In response, the Assembly passed a resolution suspending Ushie and directed that the vice chairman be sworn in as acting chairman to ensure continuity in governance and service delivery.
