Boca Juniors coach Miguel Angel Russo has passed away at the age of 69 following a prolonged battle with cancer, the club announced on Wednesday.

Russo, who had been receiving care at home after several hospitalisations in recent months, was forced to step down from his day-to-day management duties due to his illness. Despite his deteriorating health, he remained closely involved with the team, maintaining contact with his coaching staff and club executives.

Russo enjoyed three spells in charge at Boca Juniors, guiding the club to the Copa Libertadores title in 2007 and securing the Argentine league championship in 2020. Earlier this year, he also led the team at the Club World Cup.

A former Estudiantes player, Russo made over 400 appearances for the club, winning two national championships during his playing career.
