Apple is preparing for a significant redesign of its flagship iPhone, set to coincide with its 20th anniversary in 2027. The redesign will feature a foldable iPhone, alongside a new Pro model that will make extensive use of glass in its construction, reflecting the vision of the company’s former design chief, Jony Ive.

According to reports, the foldable iPhone, which is expected to arrive in 2026, will adopt a horizontal clamshell design similar to the Samsung Galaxy Z Flip. Apple is reportedly working on reducing the visibility of the crease when the phone is unfolded and is aiming to make the device slimmer.

A source close to the project revealed, “The foldable iPhone, internally codenamed V68, will not only fold but also offer a more compact design while maintaining the high-quality feel that Apple is known for.” The foldable model is expected to mark a major shift in Apple’s approach to smartphone design, as the company looks to reassert itself in a market where innovation has slowed.

Meanwhile, the iPhone Pro model is expected to feature a glass-centric design, aligning with Jony Ive’s original vision of a device that appears as a single sheet of glass. The new model will aim to provide a more immersive and premium experience, with the design shift being described as a “major shake-up” for the 20th-anniversary edition.

As noted by one insider, Apple is aiming for a design that feels more cohesive, using glass in a way that is both functional and beautiful. This could be the most ambitious redesign since the iPhone’s debut in 2007.”

However, these innovations may come at a higher price point. The anticipated introduction of tariffs on Chinese imports could increase manufacturing costs, making the new iPhone models more expensive than previous iterations. According to reports, The iPhone’s 20th anniversary redesign could carry a significant price hike, making these new models some of the most expensive iPhones yet.”

Despite the potential for higher costs, Apple’s 20th-anniversary iPhone models are expected to be unveiled in September 2027. With this redesign, Apple is aiming to set new benchmarks in smartphone innovation while celebrating two decades of revolutionising the mobile technology industry.
