The Nigerians in Diaspora Commission (NiDCOM) is set to deepen collaboration with San José State University in California, United States, following talks aimed at creating new educational and technology opportunities for Nigerian students, researchers and professionals.
The proposed partnership focuses on strengthening cooperation in technology, innovation, higher education and diaspora engagement, with both institutions exploring initiatives that will enhance knowledge exchange and skills development.
The discussions took place during a meeting between the Chairman of NiDCOM, Abike Dabiri-Erewa, and the President of San José State University, Dr Cynthia Teniente-Matson, in San José, California.
Among the initiatives considered was the proposed Silicon Valley Tech Bridge Initiative, a summer programme designed to expose Nigerian students and young professionals to emerging technologies through academic training and practical industry experience.
The programme is expected to provide participants with specialised instruction in areas such as Artificial Intelligence (AI), semiconductor technology and medical devices, while also offering opportunities to interact with leading global technology companies, including Adobe, LinkedIn and Jabil.

As part of the programme, participants will attend Black Engineer Week, where they will receive mentorship and build professional networks with accomplished Nigerian experts living and working in the diaspora.
Dabiri-Erewa described the proposed collaboration as an important step towards preparing Nigerian youths for the global technology landscape and strengthening ties with the country’s highly skilled diaspora community.
“I am excited about the possibilities these partnerships bring and the opportunities they will create for our young people to learn, innovate, and thrive on a global stage,” Dabiri-Erewa said.
The meeting also explored the establishment of a Fulbright Leadership Exchange Programme, which is expected to promote academic cooperation, leadership development and institutional partnerships between Nigeria and San José State University.
Both parties further discussed plans to create cultural murals on the university campus as a way of celebrating diversity and showcasing Nigeria’s rich cultural heritage.
President of San José State University, Dr Cynthia Teniente-Matson, reaffirmed the institution’s commitment to expanding international partnerships that promote innovation, academic excellence and global engagement.
The two organisations expressed confidence that the proposed programmes would provide valuable opportunities for Nigerian students, entrepreneurs, researchers and technology professionals, while reinforcing the long-standing educational and diplomatic ties between Nigeria and the United States.
