The National Sports Commission (NSC) has hosted the Nigerian contingent that represented the country at the World Karate Championships held in Cairo, Egypt, from 27 to 30 November.
The team, led by Hajiya Zainab Saleh, Board Member of the Karate Federation of Nigeria (KFN), consisted of four female and one male athlete. The female karatekas were Ngozi Loveth Okoro (+50kg), Godfirst Urie Ukoha-Samson (-55kg), Constance Tamuno Diepriye Abode (-61kg), and Caroline Ujunwa Okonkwo (+68kg), while Oluwaseun Olorunbe participated in the male individual kata category.
NSC Chairman Shehu Dikko commended the athletes for their sterling performances in Cairo, emphasising that the international exposure was crucial for repositioning karate in Nigeria.
He also instructed the KFN to submit its programme to the Commission to ensure that its activities are properly aligned with the 2026 sporting calendar.
“The NSC remains committed to providing equal opportunities for all sports to excel, leveraging their capacities and comparative strengths,” Dikko stated.
