Mexico City will warmly receive football supporters from all nations and cultures during the 2026 FIFA World Cup, Mayor Clara Brugada affirmed yesterday as she unveiled the official countdown clock marking one year until the tournament returns to the capital.

As the city prepares to host the World Cup for an unprecedented third time, Brugada emphasised inclusivity and openness  in clear contrast to anti-immigration policies once championed in co-host nation the United States under  President Donald Trump.

“All football fans are welcome here. In this city, no one is considered a foreigner,” Brugada declared during the FIFA-hosted event.

“We shall joyfully receive visitors from every corner of the world  with their music, colours, languages, and passion. We believe our greatest treasure lies in our diversity.”

She added: “Today marks a very special occasion for Mexico City. In exactly 365 days, we will open our doors to the world and become the first city ever to host the opening of a World Cup for the third time.”

In response to concerns from residents living near the Azteca Stadium, Mayor Brugada gave assurances that they would directly benefit from over six billion pesos earmarked for improvements to public services and infrastructure.

“We are enhancing residents’ rights with increased water supply, better public spaces, and improved services,” she noted.

“This is about building a legacy  something that fills us with immense pride. It is why we have committed to a historic level of investment in public works, infrastructure, water provision, security, and mobility.”

As part of the countdown celebrations, more than 40 buildings and landmarks across Mexico City were illuminated in green last night.
