Xenophobia: Ghana to Begin Evacuation of Citizens From South Africa

The Government of Ghana has announced plans to evacuate about 300 citizens from South Africa following a wave of xenophobic attacks targeting migrants from other sub-Saharan African countries.

Ghana’s Foreign Minister, Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, disclosed the development in a statement posted on X, formerly known as Twitter, saying the affected citizens had registered for assistance through Ghana’s High Commission in South Africa.

According to the minister, the evacuation is part of measures by the Ghanaian government to ensure the safety and welfare of its nationals amid rising tensions and violent attacks against foreign residents.

The Ghanaian government has also formally protested over videos of violent incidents circulating on social media, while reaffirming its commitment to protecting citizens both at home and abroad.

The unrest comes as some South Africans continue protests over illegal immigration from other African countries. South African authorities have acknowledged concerns over undocumented migration but have condemned the violence and pledged to crack down on xenophobic attacks.

Several African countries, including Kenya, Malawi, Lesotho, and Zimbabwe, have also issued safety advisories to their citizens living in South Africa, urging them to remain indoors and exercise caution.

Meanwhile, Nigeria has announced that at least 130 of its citizens have requested evacuation as concerns over the attacks continue to spread across the region.
