WTT Contender: Nigerian Stars Build Momentum with Regional Wins

 Nigerian player, Mathew Kuti, says his preparation for the WTT Contender tournament has been boosted by his participation in the West Africa Regional Championship.

Kuti believes the regional event serves as a crucial stepping stone toward achieving success in the upcoming WTT Contender tournament in Lagos.

He shared this in an interview during the ongoing championship in Lagos.

Kuti said he is using the opportunity to fine-tune his skills and gain valuable match experience.

“I am focused on performing well in the WTT Contender, knowing it will boost both my confidence and international ranking.

“I’m working hard to realise my dream and make Nigeria proud with my performance.

“I will give it everything I have and do all I can to make a strong impression,” he said.

Kuti noted that his ultimate goal is to excel in the WTT Contender, competing against the world’s top table tennis players.

Kuti made history as the first West African to defend the men’s singles title at the 2025 ITTF Africa West Regional Championships.

He said he is determined and well-prepared to make a strong impact in the WTT Contender and future tournaments.

Similarly, Ajoke Ojomu said she is using the regional championship as a key part of her preparation for the WTT Contender event.

Ojomu believes the tournament will give her valuable experience and international exposure.

“I’m excited to face top players and learn from every match. I will work hard to improve my skills and strategies for the challenges ahead.

“I am confident that this event will help build momentum for the WTT Contender,” she said.

According to her, the goal is to compete strongly and impress against the world’s best table tennis players. With determination and hard work, Ojomu says she feels ready for the WTT Contender’s tough competition.

Ojomu claimed her first regional title in the women’s singles, marking a memorable outing for Team Nigeria.

The regional event concluded on Saturday, July 19, with strong performances from Nigerian players.

The WTT Contender tournament in Lagos is scheduled to take place from 22 to 26. July.
