IDPwD 2025: First Lady Advocates Support For Disabled Citizens

The First Lady, Senator Oluremi Tinubu, has called for greater inclusiveness and support for refugees and Internally Displaced Persons (IDPs) in society.

Mrs Tinubu made the appeal in her message marking the annual World Refugee Day, observed on 20 June.

She noted that refugees across Nigeria and around the world have demonstrated remarkable resilience.

“But it is often the kindness of neighbours, the open arms of strangers, and the unity of communities that turn survival into hope, and hope into healing.

“Let us continue to build inclusive communities where refugees and IDPs are not just welcomed, but truly embraced and supported.

“In return, they should be law-abiding and contribute meaningfully to their host communities. Together, as a community, we are stronger,” she said.

The theme for the 2025 World Refugee Day is “Community as a Superpower.”

The day was first observed globally in 2001 to mark the 50th anniversary of the 1951 UN Convention Relating to the Status of Refugees.

Mrs Tinubu said this year’s theme underscores the vital role communities play in supporting vulnerable populations.

In recognition of her contributions and maternal role in supporting displaced persons in Nigeria, the National Commission for Refugees, Migrants and Internally Displaced Persons (NCFRMI) on 14 June renamed a resettlement city in her honour.

The Federal Commissioner of NCFRMI, Alhaji Tijani Ahmed, stated that the resettlement city currently houses about 40 households of displaced persons and refugees, providing them with decent accommodation and improved living conditions.

A total of 239 individuals have benefited from the allocations so far.
