Nigeria’s Super Eagles are one victory away from reaching the Inter-Continental FIFA World Cup Play-Off after defeating Gabon 4–1 in extra time in Rabat. The win sets up a CAF playoff final clash against the Democratic Republic of Congo.
The decisive match will take place on Sunday at Stade Prince Heritier Moulay Hassan, with the winner advancing to the FIFA Play-Off Tournament and keeping hopes alive for a place at the 2026 World Cup.
Although Nigeria has overcome Gabon, the path to Qatar’s successor tournament remains challenging. Following the CAF playoff final, Africa’s representative will face further competition in the Inter-Continental Play-Off scheduled from March 23–31, 2026, in Mexico.

The playoff will feature six teams: Nigeria (if they win Sunday), Bolivia (CONMEBOL), New Caledonia (OFC), two teams from CONCACAF, and one from Asia (AFC). Only two of the six nations will secure qualification for the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
A victory over DR Congo would move Nigeria closer to a seventh World Cup appearance in the last nine tournaments, keeping the Super Eagles’ campaign on track and fuelling excitement among fans across the country.
