The Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike, has commended President Bola Tinubu for swiftly signing the Electoral Act (Amendment) Bill 2026 into law.
In a statement released on Wednesday by his Senior Special Assistant on Public Communications and Social Media, Lere Olayinka, Wike described the President’s prompt action as a clear demonstration of his dedication to enhancing Nigeria’s democratic processes and ensuring more credible elections.
The Minister noted that the swift passage of the amended Electoral Bill by the National Assembly, followed by the President’s immediate assent, had effectively addressed the unnecessary protests from individuals he described as preparing excuses for potential electoral setbacks.
“Democracy has always been a work in progress, as it has continuously evolved,” Wike said. He added, “By consistently reviewing the Electoral Act with a view to strengthening our democratic process, it is certain that we will continue to improve it.”
He further congratulated the President and lawmakers for their roles in reinforcing the democratic framework.
“Particularly, I commend the President for not keeping Nigerians waiting for more than 24 hours before signing the Electoral Act (Amendment) Bill 2026 into law,” Wike added, highlighting the significance of the swift action in bolstering public confidence in the electoral system.
