The United States Ambassador to Nigeria, Richard Mills, has praised the Nigerian media, describing it as well-informed, vibrant, compassionate, and among the best on the African continent.
Ambassador Mills gave the commendation at a farewell dinner held on Wednesday night in Abuja for the embassy’s outgoing Press Attaché, Gilbert Morton, and two other members of the Public Diplomacy Section.
The ambassador highlighted the significant contributions of the trio in strengthening media engagement and enhancing U.S.-Nigeria relations through media, cultural, and educational outreach.
Ambassador Mills reaffirmed the U.S. Mission’s ongoing commitment to public engagement in Nigeria, particularly in communicating the United States’ policies, priorities, and shared values, while also deepening diplomatic ties between both countries.
“The Nigerian press is among the most well-informed, most caring, and most committed on the continent,” Mills said.
“It is vital that the United States continues to engage with the press on our policies, our issues, and our aspirations for both Nigeria and the U.S.”
He specifically acknowledged Morton’s efforts in fostering strong media partnerships and leading impactful education outreach initiatives.
“Gil brought me into contact with so many of the wonderful individuals here,” he added.
Ambassador Mills also commended the entire Public Diplomacy team for their tireless work in promoting the shared values of both nations.
“We are a team dedicated to ensuring that the values shared by Nigerians and Americans not only endure but help shape the future for our children.
“A major part of that mission lies in public outreach communicating those values, ensuring they are understood, and making sure they remain relevant.”
In his remarks, Morton expressed gratitude for the support he received from the Nigerian media, describing his experience in Nigeria as a deeply rewarding chapter in his professional journey.

He noted that Nigeria’s dynamic press and the embassy’s educational outreach were the standout aspects of his time in the country.

Victoria Cook, who coordinated various cultural engagements and American Spaces programmes, said it was a privilege to work across Nigeria and collaborate with alumni of U.S. government initiatives.
“I truly felt that my role here was to empower you to help bring your innovative ideas and creative visions to life,” she said.
Katarina Ramos, who managed the embassy’s youth engagement portfolio, spoke about the remarkable potential she observed among young Nigerians.
She expressed her deep appreciation for Nigerian culture and the warm hospitality she received throughout her posting, calling it the highlight of her experience.
“Nigeria is home to incredibly talented and hardworking people, and it has been a privilege to engage with even a few of them,” Ramos said.
