Professor Chris Piwuna, a consultant psychiatrist and the current Dean of Student Affairs at the University of Jos (UNIJOS), has been elected as the new national president of the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU). This appointment follows the conclusion of Professor Emmanuel Osodeke’s tenure as president.
The election, which took place during ASUU’s 23rd National Delegates Congress at the University of Benin in Edo State, saw Professor Piwuna triumph over his main contender, Professor Adamu Babayo from Abubakar Tafawa Balewa University, Bauchi. His victory marks the beginning of his tenure as the 14th president of ASUU.
Professor Piwuna’s leadership comes at a critical time for Nigerian universities, which continue to grapple with a variety of challenges, including unresolved issues regarding earned academic allowances, the increasing brain drain, and the overall welfare of academic staff. These concerns have been at the forefront of ASUU’s advocacy in recent years, and the new president’s leadership will undoubtedly play a key role in addressing them.
As the new head of ASUU, Professor Piwuna has expressed his commitment to tackling these pressing issues while ensuring the continued advancement of higher education in Nigeria. His election reflects the union’s ongoing dedication to improving the conditions of university staff and ensuring that the educational system remains robust and functional in the face of various challenges.
In his acceptance speech, Professor Piwuna acknowledged the work done by his predecessor and emphasised his intention to work collaboratively with all stakeholders to resolve ongoing challenges within the education sector. He also reassured members of the union that his leadership would be marked by a focus on unity and collective progress.
Professor Piwuna’s appointment is seen as a significant moment for ASUU as it navigates the evolving dynamics of higher education in Nigeria. With his experience and expertise, both in academia and leadership, it is expected that he will continue to steer the union towards advocating for the improvement of university education and the well-being of academic staff across the country.
